Dr. Poland Lai (link), Assistant Professor at York University, article Falling through the care cracks: younger people in long-term care homes (link) explores the issue of young persons with disabilities residing in Long-term care homes. She argues that LTC homes are not always considered as the most appropriate place for young persons with disabilities to reside, but the stark reality is that this is sometimes one of very limited choices available. Dr. Lai’s article raises important questions regarding the level of supports that should be made available to persons with disabilities when care from family members and care at home are not sufficient.

Continuing with her research, Dr. Lai is now looking for individuals to share their experiences with receiving care and/or providing care at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The on-line survey is open to anyone:

  • 18 years or older
  • Lives in Ontario
  • Has a long-term health condition, a disability or problems related to aging.

Participation in the survey can be anonymous, with format available in English, French, and ASL. If you require a hard copy (including large print) version of the survey, e-mail: poland.lai@yorku.ca (link).

Further information about the survey can be found here (link).
